WE SHOULD ALL BE FEMINISTS

Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is incredibly eloquent. Her book following TED Talk from 2012 with the same title is an essential and inspiring read to all men and women.

One line that really stuck with me though sums up why I started this blog:

“I believe deeply in the ability of human beings to

REMAKE themselves for the BETTER”

Hopefully together we can not only better ourselves but the world we live in. Time to reset.

If as much as me you like to learn through listening as you do through reading, below is the talk which inspired the book, and you can also click on this playlist and watch her first talk, from 2009, The Danger of the Single Story.

Before you jump onto these though I'd like to share a couple of thoughts. Language matters. A fan of literature, I am also a big advocate of words being this incredibly powerful tool. One that should be used wisely.

"Some people ask, 'Why the word feminist? Why not just say you are a believer in human rights, or something like that?' Because that would be dishonest [...] For centuries, the world divided human beings into two groups and then proceeded to exclude and oppress one group. It is only fair that the solution to the problem should acknowledge that."

Adichie also talks about the same conflicting messages girls are used to hearing. The same topic so very well illustrated on the recently trending Be a Lady They Said video (also below), featuring Cynthia Nixon, from Sex & The City, based on a poem by Camille Rainville.

If you're interested in the topic of language and feminism, I'd suggest clicking on this link to read my post and hear what Mayim Bialik (Big Bang Theory, Blossom) has to say about it.
